SYNOPSIS
“How can you feel a feeling unless you have the word for it?”
The only deaf member of an eccentric, intellectual family, Billy longs to be heard. When a romance with a woman who teaches him sign language opens him up to a new world of self-expression, Billy discovers that instead of trying to fit into his family's world, he can break out and find his own. Quick-witted, funny and moving Tribes is a powerful look at language, love, and what it truly means to be understood.
PRESENTED WITH ASL INTERPRETATION: NOVEMBER 30 AT 8:00 P.M /DECEMBER 7 AT 7:00 P.M. /DECEMBER 13 AT 2:00 P.M.
“TRIBES is as much about the tyranny of language as it is about the misery of not being able to hear it.”
- The New Yorker
"There's so much going on in…TRIBES… intellect and sentiment, love and cruelty, witty zingers and biting put-downs. But in Nina Raine's dazzling play, too much is a good thing."
- NY Post
“TRIBES made me excited about … theatre again; I haven't been this knocked out by a play in a long time.”
