Tony Award-winning EQUUS opens season

Rehearsals have begun for Peter Shaffer’s modern masterwork Equus. Domy Reiter-Soffer directs an incredible cast in this artful and thought-provoking story.

This is Equus like you’ve never seen it before. Domy Reiter-Soffer studied theatre, music, dance, and art at some of the most prestigious universities in Europe. His theatre productions have been staged at The Abbey and The Royal Court Theatre, among many others. Pulling from this vast pool of knowledge and experience, Reiter Soffer’s vision of Equus is wholly original and absolutely captivating.

His ballet version of Equus staged at the Dance Theatre of Harlem at The Met was named Best Ballet of the Year by the New York Daily News.

Have a sneak peek of the play with Domy Reiter-Soffer as he takes us behind the curtain and explains to us what Equus is all about.

Celebrate Global Interdependence Day at the Segal Centre

In commemoration of the events of September 11, 2001, Interdependence Day was founded by a group of scholars and civic and political leaders as a call to action for the world to come together for peace. They named September 12th Interdependence Day. Since then, eight Interdependence Days have been held in cities around the world.

Author and political theorist Benjamin Barber started the first in Philadelphia in 2003. Others followed yearly in Rome, Paris, Morocco, Mexico City, Brussels, Istanbul and Berlin. This will be the first Interdependence Day held in Montreal. This is also the first time the event will be held simultaneously in cities around the world, including New York City.

Montreal’s major arts and multicultural organizations will meet at the Segal Centre to present a series of inspiring events demonstrating the power of the arts to build intercultural bridges and a stronger global society.

For more information, visit SegalCentre.org or the Interdependence Movement website.

Wandering Stars theatre troupe wraps up summer tour

Theatre never sleeps! This summer, the Segal Centre Academy’s bilingual touring theatre troupe, Wandering Stars, has been busy touring summer camps, community organizations and parks around Montreal with their original musical In Transit. The tour ended with a performance at the Segal Centre Tuesday, August 9th, after reaching almost 2,000 youths across Québec in English and in French.

Along with our partners at Agence Ometz, we want to thank our sponsor TD Bank Financial Group and acknowledge the generous support of Dorothea Gould and Barbara and Don Seal. Not only an invaluable and engaging tool for building intercultural bridges, the Wandering Stars program is a rare and special opportunity for young artists to hone their skills with some of the best working professional artists from Montreal and beyond.

All participants receive training in dancing, singing and acting from the Segal Centre Academy's accomplished instructors. It's all a part of the Segal's mission to support the next generation of artists.

What young artists learn in The Academy translates to real success. For Lies My Father Told Me star Jamie Mayers, the Segal Centre Academy helped him channel his potential. Click and watch the video to find out how.

Les coups de cœur

In this section, I’ll be sharing some of my favourites in theatre happening around the province.

If you fancy a spin in the country, Equus cast-member Daniel Lillford’s new play The Cabbage Patch – a black comedy and mystery – will be enjoying its World Premiere from September 9-18 at the Depot Theatre in Westport, New York. You have seen Daniel perform here in An Enemy of the People (2007-2008) and Inherit the Wind (2009-2010). As a playwright, you may have seen his play Maddy Heisler at the Centaur.
