“Well, that’s theatre. Either you master it or it masters you.”
Art imitates life, or is it the other way around? The Play’s the Thing by Ferenc Molnár and adapted by P.G. Wodehouse walks the fine line between art and life in a witty and clever comedy that guarantees plenty of laughs.

Directed by Shaw Festival veteran Blair Williams, this charming play boasts an all-Montreal cast of Paul Hopkins, James Kidnie, Chip Chuipka, Jessica B. Hill, Michael Rudder, Chris Barillaro and Jonathan Patterson.

The Segal Centre is proud to announce a new partnership with CJAD.

You won’t want to miss our CJAD Sunday at the Segal lecture on Sunday, October 30th at 11am with Keith Turnbull. A director, dramaturge and producer, Keith Turnbull is past Artistic Director/Executive Producer of Banff Theatre Arts. He is also the former Artistic Director of the Manitoba Theatre Centre and founding Artistic Director of the NDWT, a First Nations theatre company. Turnbull will lecture on the play within a play motif in The Play’s the Thing.

The ArtLounge: A New Neighbourhood Hot Spot

The ArtLounge, our downstairs lounge reminiscent of the jazz and cabaret lounges of the 1950s and 60s, is launching its all-new Fall programming. Come stop by the Centre on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings for open mics and comedy and improv nights.

The Fall season of programming opened on Sunday with Broadway Café, an open mic for musical theatre lovers. Amateurs and professionals alike sing their favourite show tunes, accompanied by a professional pianist. Come to hone your skills or to support local Montreal talent and enjoy great music, drinks and company. The next Broadway Café is Sunday, December 4th at 8pm.

Next up is the unpredictable and always fun Improv Night. Montreal’s Pat Dussault hosts with improv models that work to the crowd including the Saturday Night Live model, the competitive model and more, beginning Saturday, October 22nd at 11pm.

You won’t want to miss Comedy Night, MC’d by the Segal Centre’s own stand up comic Keith Waterfield on Thursday, October 27th at 8:30pm. These stand up comedy showcases feature five comedians, including a headliner. This opening event includes comics Chris Betts, Bianca Yates and Toronto comic David Heti. Stop by for smart and clever comedy for comedy lovers.

All events are $5 and can be purchased at the Segal Centre Box Office by calling 514.739.7944. Tickets may also be purchased in cash on the day of the performance. The ArtLounge bar will be open and accepting cash and credit cards.

CinemaSpace: Made in Montreal, November 3rd at 6:30pm

Come see what our local filmmakers are up to in CinemaSpace’s special one-day event Made in Montreal: Recent Films & Videos with 12 works made by local artists.

Presented in two short programs, this special showcase merges a variety of approaches in moving-image art, demonstrating the rich diversity of current practices by Montreal’s film and video artists.

The two programs focus on works by both emerging and established artists who originally come from outside of Montreal and have made the city home, and whose presence has made significant contributions to our vibrant local artistic community.

Artists include: Elisabeth Belliveau, Alexander Carson, Ali El-Darsa, Kandis Friesen, Gwynne Fulton, Tao Gu, Richard Kerr, Kim Kielhofner, Thomas Kneubühler, Justine Litynski, Mark Loeser, Terryll Loffler, Marc Pelletier and Kim Simard.

The screening is followed by a Q&A with the artists.

Also in the CinemaSpace:
The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre presents The Last Survivors (2010, USA) on Wednesday, October 26th at 7pm at the Segal Centre CinemaSpace.

The Last Survivor is a character-based, feature-length documentary that presents the stories of genocide Survivors and their struggle to make sense of tragedy by working to educate, motivate and promulgate a civic response to mass atrocity crimes, with a focus on awareness, prevention and promoting social activism and civic engagement.

Alice Herscovitch, Executive Director of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre will be introducing the film.

Cocktails in the ArtLounge will follow.

Tickets are free. Reservations are required with tickets available for pick-up at the Segal Centre Box Office.

Segal Centre's Young Leaders 2011-2012 Season Launch

Next Monday, October 24, over a hundred of young leaders from the business community will meet at the Segal Centre as part of the 2011-2012 Segal Centre's Young Leaders (SCYL) launch event.

Manon Gauthier, CEO of the Centre, as well as Saul Polo and Michael Tevel, SCYL Co-Presidents, will be welcoming Ms. Kathleen Weil, Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities, along with Mr. Javier San Juan, President and CEO, L’Oréal Canada, and Lynda Thalie, signer and songwriter to discuss the arts as a tool to promote cultural dialogue and diversity in our communities.

The discussion will be followed by a short preview of our all new ArtLounge comedy night series, The Laugh Pack.

Les coups de cœur

In this section, I’m sharing some of my favourites in theatre happening around the province.

French theatre in Montreal is world class. Theatre de Nouveau Monde (TNM) has launched its season with Molière's L'École des femmes. It stars Guy Nadon: one of my favourite Quebec actors and runs until October 29th.

For some indie theatre, check out Hyena Subpoena, which opened Thursday night. It is directed by Alison Darcy, the Artistic Director of Scapegoat Carnivale (our new Resident Company who will premiere The Heretics of Bohemia in the Segal Studio this winter). Hyena runs October 13-16, 20-23 and 27-29 at 8pm at Les Ateliers Jean Brillant, 661 Rose De Lima (behind Lionel Groulx metro).
