The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz is opening at the Segal Centre in Montreal on Sunday.

This theatrical version isn't going to be the same Duddy Kravitz you might remember from Mordecai Richler's 1959 novel, or the 1974 movie, also written by Mordecai Richler, and starring a young Richard Dreyfuss. This production is a musical. And unlike the novel or the film, it's got a happy ending.

The score was composed by Alan Menken 30 years ago. He's the 8-time Oscar winning composer better known for scoring iconic films such as The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

"It's almost too good to be true," says the Segal Centre's new artistic director Lisa Rubin. "You have a combination of an iconic novel set in Montreal, for Montreal audiences. And then you're told about a musical written by Alan Menken and David Spencer. Something's got to be wrong if we didn't invest in it."

A 1987 musical version of the production, also composed by Menken, was presented in Philadelphia, but closed shortly after with audiences thinking the ending was too serious. For this production the music's been reworked, in addition to the new ending.

Lisa Rubin says the entire Mordecai Richler family approves of the new lighter ending to this iconic Canadian story about a young ambitious resident of Montreal's St. Urbain Street, who dreams of buying land and moving away.

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz opens June 7.
