Scientific Americans in association with SideMart Theatrical Grocery

Rehearsals are in full swing for our next production, Scientific Americans, by one of Canada's premier playwrights John Mighton. SideMart Theatrical Grocery takes their innovation and originality to the Segal Main Stage after four years as the Segal Centre's Resident Theatre Company in the Studio.
Scientific Americans is the story of Jim, a brilliant scientist, and his fiancée Carol, a computer programmer working on artificial intelligence. When Jim gets a job with the U.S. Department of Defense, he learns his research could be used to develop a powerful new weapon. The pressure of a high-level position within the extremely secretive American Military Industrial Complex challenges Jim's moral integrity. In the meantime, his relationship with Carol deteriorates until she finally gives him an ultimatum – me or them. Seamlessly weaving the troubles of the heart with those of the conscience, Scientific Americans is a thought-provoking and socially relevant look at the consequences of one's actions.
Featuring some of the most exciting acting talent in Canada, this production boasts a strikingly visual design that draws audiences into Reagan's Cold War America.

In this post-apocalyptic story, the famed German playwright Marius von Mayenburg plunges us into a world where reality has been turned upside down. With no clear reason why, night has become day and the city is covered with sand. The carefully constructed human order has turned to chaos. It is in this world that M finds himself, forced to channel his animal instincts in order to survive.
Mayenburg warns against an individualist society that can transform us into beasts in this Kafka-esque journey.
A chilling and engaging story not to be missed.

Juno Award-winning singer/songwriter Coral Egan launches the 2nd season of the Women of the World Music Series

The Women of the World Music Series is back, featuring more outstanding female voices from Quebec and beyond, opening with Coral Egan on Thursday, January 26th at 7:30pm.
Coral Egan's musical education began early as the daughter of singer Karen Young. Her first album, The Path of Least Resistance, was released in 2002 and launched her career across Canada and internationally and earned her a Juno nomination for Jazz Vocal Album of the Year. Her rich voice and reflective lyrics are experienced to full effect in the intimacy of the Segal Centre Studio

The Power Jazz series continues with a unique performance from The Trudel-Bourbonnais Duo, made up of pianist Marianne Trudel and harmonica player Lévy Bourbonnais. The combination of piano and harmonica is a rare one in Canada and creates a rich, enchanting sound.
Marianne Trudel and Lévy Bourbonnais are master improvisers, lending originality to each performance and excitement to their touching music. Their charisma, ability to communicate with audiences and chemistry on stage lends their shows an air of freshness and spontaneity.
Their repertoire is made up of original works: beautiful compositions drawing from jazz, world and classical music delivered with contagious enthusiasm.

Love's Journey (2009) in the Segal Centre CinemaSpace
Sunday, February 5th at 2pm
Filmed in Montreal and the United States, the documentary film Love's Journey (57 min.) examines the nature of love and the inherent complications of human relationships. Topics like passion, marriage, sex, psychology and spirituality all play a role in helping the viewer understand the real value in relating to another person, and to ultimately recognizing that love is in the mind. Love's Journey includes interviews with a Montreal sexologist, a Roman Catholic priest and a clinical psychologist, Dr. Kenneth Wapnick, from the Institute for Teaching Inner Peace through a Course in Miracles. |

Les coups de cœur
There's a great concert coming up at Théâtre Outremont on Thursday, February 9th at 8:30 with singer Yasmin Levy. It's presented by Traquen'Art Prouctions' Musiques et Traditions du Monde Series.
This young Israeli singer has been described as a rising star in the World Music scene by The Guardian. Weaving jazz and flamenco with the Ladino/Sephardic tradition, Yasmin's style is very unique.
