Scientific Americans began previews on Sunday! Don't miss this darkly comic, visually stunning production presented in association with SideMart Theatrical Grocery, one of the most original independent theatre companies in Canada.

Written by John Mighton, one of Canada's premier playwrights, Scientific Americans is the story of Jim, a brilliant scientist, and his fiancée Carol, a computer programmer working on artificial intelligence. When Jim gets a job with the U.S. Department of Defense, he learns his research could be used to develop a powerful new weapon. The pressure of a high-level position within the extremely secretive American Military Industrial Complex challenges Jim's moral integrity. In the meantime, his relationship with Carol deteriorates until she finally gives him an ultimatum – me or them. Seamlessly weaving the troubles of the heart with those of the conscience, Scientific Americans is a thought-provoking and socially relevant look at the consequences of one's actions.

With no clear reason why, night has become day and the city is covered with sand. The carefully constructed human order has turned to chaos. It is in this world that M finds himself, forced to channel his animal instincts in order to survive.

Mayenburg warns against an individualist society that can transform us into beasts in this Kafka-esque journey.

Jardin du soleil, a short visual poem that revolves around solar panels in Italy and France, will precede the film.

When Mikhail Bulgakov turned his novel White Guard into the play Days of the Turbins he shifted the focus from the fate of an army losing a Civil War to the fate of a family losing their home and way of life. The story of the play's creation and performance under Stalin's unexpected patronage parallels the story within the play, that of survival, disillusionment, and compromise.

Les coups de cœur
This week: special guest Jonathan Rondeau, Director of Production

A panoply of Morris Panych kicks off theatre's winter season starting with his twisted comedy Vigile (ou le veilleur) at Théâtre du Rideau Vert; running until March 3rd. It stars the legendary Kim Yaroshevskaya of Fanfreluche renown in an emotionally layered, touching two-hander with Panych's signature black humour woven through. The Segal is a co-producer of the piece and will be bringing the play to our stage in March in its original English. Check out both versions and compare! Also opening this week is Panych's new play In Absentia at the Centaur and in March, Dawson College will be mounting a student version of Panych's 7 Stories.
