The wait is almost over! After opening to much critical and audience acclaim in South Africa this summer, Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee's provocative tale of political intrigue comes to life on stage at the Segal Centre.

From January 27th to February 17th, 2013.

Set in a small frontier town under the jurisdiction of a political entity known only as "the Empire", the story is told from the perspective of the town's magistrate, who has experienced peace and tranquility until a threat from "the barbarians" throws his world into turmoil. A gripping political thriller that will make you ask: just who are the barbarians?

Under the direction of multiple-award winning director Alexandre Marine, and featuring a stellar lineup of South Africa's best young talent, Waiting for the Barbarians is a unique chance to see groundbreaking world theatre at its best, at the Segal Theatre.

International music sensation launches the third edition of the Women of the World series!

The Segal's hit music series is back for another season of inspiring performances by some of Quebec's leading female artists.

With a musical career that spans over fifteen years and over a hundred concerts that have taken her all over the world, the multi-talented singer-songwriter and cellist Jorane will take to the Segal Studio stage solo after the release of her newest album L'instant aimé. An unforgettable evening with an artist whose career continues to soar, this vibrant and intimate concert will also feature songs from her hit 2011 recording Une sorcière comme les autres.

Enjoy a day of classic Yiddish-language films in the Segal Centre Studio. Films Restored with Subtitles by The National Centre for Jewish Film.

2:00 p.m. East and West  (Austria, 1923, B&W Silent)
A delightful Yiddish comedy starring the legendary Molly Picon.
Presented with English and Yiddish intertitles

4:00 p.m.  Without a Home (Poland, 1939, B&W)
The story of the separation and hardships faced by immigrants in America at the turn of the century. The last Yiddish feature made in Poland before WWII, this 1939 film was based on a 1907 play by the prolific playwright Jacob Gordin.
Presented in Yiddish with English subtitles.

6:30 p.m. The Light Ahead  (USA, 1939, B&W)
Impoverished and disabled lovers Fishke and Hodel dream of life in the big city of Odessa, free from the poverty and stifling old-world prejudices of the shtetl. Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer.
Presented in Yiddish with English subtitles.

The Segal Academy launches Segal Goes to School program!

Segal Goes to School recently held its inaugural session at Bialik High School. The program is a designed to highlight the role music and the arts plays in identity building and to promote intercultural dialogue and expression.

Segal Goes to School is a Segal Centre for Performing Arts' Academy program made possible through the generous support of Federation CJA Gen J.
