Sholom Aleichem (1859-1916) captured the imagination of generations with his humorous and evocative tales of Shtetl life. For the last installment of the always engaging Sunday-@-The Segal, renowned talent agent and owner of Artists Group East Robert Malcolm will join us for an intimate talk prior to the first preview of Sholom Aleichem: Laughter Through Tears. This is an exciting opportunity to interact with one of the most respected figures in American show business in the intimacy of the Segal theatre. Longtime friend and agent to Theodore Bikel, Mr. Malcolm's lecture will offer insight on the career of the legendary stage actor, the production of Sholom Aleichem, and his own experience as one of the most respected figures in American show business. The talk will be followed by a Q & A session.

About Robert Malcolm
A protégé of famed actress and drama teacher Uta Hagen, Robert Malcolm was a professional actor and director for almost 20 years before becoming one of the most prominent talent agents in the United States. In 1984, he took over the Artists Group Ltd. in New York City, left to him by his own agent after her death. Driven to expand his business, he traveled to Los Angeles in search of a west coast agency to represent his New York clients. One of those agencies was The Artists Group Ltd., and by 1987, Robert was representing most of their west coast clients in New York. Robert eventually took over the group in 1990, changing the name to The Artists Group East, which he still owns today. For over twenty-five years, he developed a roster of well-known actors including Jerry Orbach, Mickey Rooney, Ann B. Davis. Florence Henderson, Shirley Jones, Barry Williams, David Hedison, Loretta Swit, Jamie Farr, Bill Christopher, Harry Morgan, Judy Kaye. Dom Deluise, Charles Nelson Reilly, Carole Cook, Theodore Bikel and Gary Coleman, many of which he still represents today.

TITANIC, THE UNTOLD STORY

One of the most intriguing stories to have surfaced from the sinking of the Titanic.

July 16 to July 22, 2012 in the Segal Studio

Titanic: The Untold Story is a play that confronts fact with legend. Joseph Laroche, a man of Haitian descent, was the only black person to sail aboard the Titanic. There is also a legend that the heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Johnson, was refused passage aboard the Titanic. As Laroche and Johnson tell their stories, there is an intense inter-play between the two characters, each one challenging the other's actions in life. The two men couldn't be more different. Laroche is an engineer, an academic with reason backed by science. Johnson is a loud braggart who thinks with his fists. The two men square off in a fight defending their actions, morals and ideas. It is a play laden with fierce verbal battles, quick wit and startling information about two black men and their relationship with the most famous ship in the world.

The Segal Centre for Performing Arts and Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal take you behind the scenes of Harry, an impressive new creation by the American-Israeli choreographer Barak Marshall.

July 9th at 5:00pm

In partnership with the Consulate General of Israel in Montreal.

Be among the first to see excerpts from this work—created for the 40th-anniversary of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal—on July 9. The performance will be preceded by a cocktail beginning at 5 p.m., in the presence of the dancers, and followed by a discussion with BJM’s Artistic Director Louis Robitaille and Barak Marshall.

Keep Yiddish Alive! Wall of a Thousand Names

Support Yiddish Theatre at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts:
After surviving the Holocaust, Dora Wasserman made a commitment to Keep Yiddish language and culture alive. In honour of her dream, in 2010, the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre established a digital Wall of a Thousand Names. Last year, the campaign raised $10,100 in support of Yiddish programming at the Segal Centre. On the occasion of On Second Avenue, the Segal Centre is once again reaching out to the community. Anyone wishing to express their support may do so by adding their name to the wall for the nominal sum of $25.00 per individual. All proceeds raised through this initiative will be used to fund Yiddish Theatre programming and initiatives year round at the Segal Centre and will be eligible for a tax receipt.
