VIGIL a co-production with Théâtre du Rideau Vert

After a successful run at Théâtre du Rideau Vert, Morris Panych's Vigil opened on the Segal Mainstage on March 15th. Starring Kim Yaroshevskaya and Marcel Jeannin, do not miss this delightful black comedy by one of Canada's most prolific playwrights.

Vigil tells the story of Kemp, a self-centered bank clerk, who receives a letter from his Aunt Grace whom he has not seen for thirty years. Sick and alone, Grace reaches out to her only living relative implying that the end may be near. Without hesitation, Kemp rushes across the country to be at her side. To his surprise and dismay, the old lady does not seem as ill as she may have let on. Vigil examines questions of family, identity and human isolation through humour and tenderness, with a twist that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Now in its original French language, critically-acclaimed play Traffik Femme runs in the Segal Studio until March 24th.
Nominated for a Governor General's literary award, Traffik Femme tells the impossible story of a woman caught in the hell of human trafficking. A unique blend of physical, musical, dance, comical and shadow theatre, this subversive yet humour-filled story offers insight on the issue of violence against women, while helping us denounce the unbearable.

The Art of Cultural Diversity
In partnership with McGill University, the Walrus Foundation and the Insitute for Public Life of Arts and Ideas (IPLAI)
April 3rd at 6pm in the Segal Theatre.

After last year's sold out Walrus McGill debates at the Segal, we welcome back a group of well-known thinkers to speak on various aspects of cultural diversity in Montreal—and in Quebec as a whole.

Speakers include: Jenny Burman (Art History and Communication Studies, McGill), Cameron Charlebois (Canada Lands Company), Anne-Marie Jean (Culture Montréal), Anne Lagacé Dowson (broadcaster, and founder of the Tolerance Foundation), Maurice Forget (Fasken Martineau), Manon Gauthier (Segal Centre), Nantali Indongo (Nomadic Massive), Eric M'Boua (Diversité Artistique Montréal), Noah Richler (author and broadcaster), and Will Straw (McGill Institute of the Study of Canada).

Montreal guitarist Gary Schwartz and his 10-piece band celebrate jazz master Ornette Coleman with Lettingo, winner of the 2011 Opus Concert of the Year in the Jazz and World Music Category.

An explosive performance by Natalie Choquette, one of the most entertaining opera singers of our times. Joined by jazz musician John Roney at the piano, her unique blend of opera, comedy and jazz is sure to shake up the Segal Studio.

Join us for a musical afternoon at the Segal and enjoy works by Johann Strauss, Joseph Lanner, Johann Schrammel and Emmerich Kalman, presented by Montreal's premier chamber music ensemble.

Performed by Berta Rosenohl, piano; Luis Grinhauz and Van Armenian, violins; Lambert Chen, viola; Mariève Bock, cello.

Drawing inspiration from new jazz, Motown, singer/songwriters, epic 70's power ballads and the Montreal sound, vocal sensation Angela Galuppo combines the sensibilities of jazz with pop and indie rock for what is sure to be a memorable musical evening.

Part of the Lightstruck Series

Phil Solomon's long and prolific career as a filmmaker continues to establish him as one of the most important voices active in American experimental cinema today. Solomon makes his much-awaited first appearance in Montreal, presenting 10 of his evocative films and videos in two separate programs.

Following the screenings, the director will be available for a Q&A session.

Theatre and Danger Lecture series continues with Verdi's Dangerous Voices

Prof. Steven Huebner (Schulich School of Music, McGill University) will lead the next installment of our riveting lecture series, in partnership with IPLAI (The Institute for Public Life of Arts and Ideas).
This talk will examine Verdi's Macbeth and invite reflections on various ways opera can communicate a sense of danger.

Les coups de cœur

This week: Friend and Segal Centre Head of Casting Rachelle Glait stars in State of Denial, a play by Rahul Varma that will be running at the McCord Museum until April 1st.

Directed by Deborah Forde, State of Denial is about hidden identities, inspired by interviews acquired through the life stories of Montrealers displaced by war, genocide and other human rights violations. This insightful new play is produced by Montreal's Teesri Duniya Theatre, whose socially and politically relevant work strives to support a multicultural vision of society.
