FLICK'S PICKS Last Wednesday, the Segal Centre hosted Diamonds & Champagne, a fundraising event in support of youth arts education at the Segal. Nearly 200 guests enjoyed a luxurious evening that featured the best of the best in the performing arts followed by the first annual Segal Centre after-party, Bling & Bubbly, presented by the Segal Centre Young Leaders. The benefit raised funds that contribute to Academy programming and educational initiatives at the Segal Centre, giving a voice to the next generation of artists in our community.

By Moishe Rosenfeld and Zalmen Mlotek June 10th to July 1st, 2012 A musical ride through the history of Yiddish Theatre featuring a huge cast and a live band! Bryna Wasserman returns to the Segal Centre as Honorary Artistic Director of the DWYT to co-direct this critically-acclaimed musical revue with Audrey Finkelstein. In Yiddish with English and French supertitles. Don't forget! The last CJAD Sunday-@-The Segal of the season is on Sunday, June 10th at 11am. For this final edition, we welcome expert in Jewish Studies and Yiddish language and culture, Anna Fishman Gonshor. An active member of the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre for over fifty years, Mrs. Gonshor is a full-time lecturer in the Department of Jewish Studies at McGill University and has served for many years as faculty in the YIVO Weinreich Summer Programme in Yiddish Language and Culture at Columbia University and at NYU. A leading voice in Yiddish academia, in 2009 Ms. Fishman Gonshor chaired the academic symposiums which were part of the First and Second International Yiddish Theatre Festivals at the Segal Centre in Montreal. Mother in Love The Segal Centre presents: June 2nd at 9:30pm A hit at the Beit Lessin Theatre in Tel-Aviv, Mother in Love tells the story of Michal, a successful lawyer and divorced mother of two, who finds herself on her own when her two grown sons leave home. When she falls in love and discovers a whole new life, one of her sons objects. The clash that follows raises the question: how far must a parent go for his or her child? Celebrate Bloomsday at the Segal Centre on June 15th! Presented by McGill Community for Lifelong Learning (MCLL) Bloomsday commemorates the anniversary of the events of Ulysses, James Joyce's masterpiece. Every year, Bloomsday is celebrated in different cities around the world with public readings of Ulysses, lectures on Joyce and his work. Enjoy two short films that commemorate this event followed by a brief discussion afterwards: The Bloom Mystery (2007) Hungarian-born filmmaker Csilla Toldy explores the Hungarian-Jewish origins of Leopold Bloom and takes us to his father's birthplace in Hungary. Presented at 1pm. Shalom Ireland – Shalom Ireland (2003) by director Valerie Lapin Ganley. This documentary about Ireland's little-known Jewish community traces the history of Irish Jewry and the involvement of Irish Jews in major historical events central to Irish Independence and the foundation of Israel. "It is Opening Week at the Stratford Festival. This year's company features some of the finest actors in Canada, including many you have seen on the Segal stage: Carla Bennett (Houdini), Michael Blake (Scientific Americans), Ben Carlson (The Importance of Being Earnest), Naomi Costain (Cabaret), Carmen Grant and Nora McLellan (both Harvey), Randy Hughson (Buried Child and upcoming in RED), C. David Johnson (Tryst), Ian Lake (Amadeus), Ayrin Mackie (Lies My Father Told Me), Alon Nashman (Jerusalem: the Musical, My Mother's Courage), and Gareth Potter (The Tempest). Keep your eye on Leah Doz, a recent NTS grad who is going to light up their stages. Segal Centre favourite Chris Abraham (Salt-Water Moon, The Glass Menagerie, Hedda Gabler, I Am My Own Wife, Geometry in Venice) directs The Matchmaker. Closer to home, it is Fringe Festival time! Tons of shows from Montreal and around the world. Great for those like me who love late night theatre. Astra Theatre, which is run by members of the Segal Front of House and Box Office staff, is putting on a production of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Crystle Reid is directing and Liz Neal and Scott Humphrey are performing. Alice plays from 16-24 June at Les Scènes Contemporaines La Chapelle.
