There aren’t many productions of any play that I would go to see twice. A theatre critic often has to see multiple productions of the same play again and again in order to build up an objective perspective of an important work. But a temptation to return for a second viewing of any particular production is rare.

The Segal Centre production of John Logan’s Tony Award-Winning Red poses that temptation, not only because of its excellent production values (direction by Martha Henry, set by Eo Sharp) and fine performance (Randy Hughson and Jesse Aaron Dwyre) but because the play itself, inspired by the life of visual artist Mark Rothko, is so intelligent and provocative that one hearing doesn’t seem enough for full absorption.

Sadly, I’m not going to be able to return to Red during the brief remaining duration of the Segal Centre production. It ends Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, after its 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. performances that day. But anyone who has been procrastinating about buying a ticket to Red needs to know that time is running out. Consider yourself told. And, just for fun, wear red. Then count how many other people have done the same.
