Frédérick Gravel and GravelArtGroup present a work-in-progress production of their upcoming show Usually Beauty Fails

For this new work, Frédérick Gravel will present an irreverent, crazy, musical and poetic piece that follows in the path of Gravel's Work and Tout se pète la gueule, chérie, which were met with acclaim both here and in Europe. A declaration of ambiguous love for popular culture and the high culture of dance, the piece is performed by 8 dancers / musicians who break loose to the music of Grouped'ArtGravelArtGroup and the trenchant words of Gravel.

Spotlight on actor Scott Wentworth
Playing the charismatic high-roller Sky Masterson, Scott Wentworth is one of Canada's leading stage actors. Over the course of seventeen seasons at the Stratford Festival, Mr. Wentworth has played such roles as Iago in Othello, the title roles in Macbeth and Henry IV and Sky Masterson in… Guys and Dolls! He has starred on Broadway in Lost In Yonkers, Anna Karenina, Getting Married, and Welcome To The Club, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. He has also written the book for two musicals: Gunmetal Blues and Enter The Guardsman at the Donmar Warehouse in London, for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award.

Did you know? Among Mr. Wentworth's favourite roles is Mark Rothko in RED at the Houston Alley Theatre. The award-winning play about two years in the life of the Abstract-Expressionist painter follows Guys and Dolls in our 2012-2013 theatre season.

The Segal Centre is proud to partner with the Institute for the Public Life of Arts and Ideas (IPLAI) at McGill University to introduce Sunday-@-The Segal, Monday-@-McGill. The partnership will expand the popular Sunday-@-The Segal lecture series to include subsequent Monday-@-McGill workshops that will give a smaller group of participants the chance to address a text, theme, or question from the Sunday session in greater depth.

To open the 2012-2013 series we are pleased to welcome stage director, conductor, and Director of Opera McGill, Patrick Hansen.

Patrick Hansen, director of opera studies at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, is a vocal coach, stage director, conductor, and acting teacher. Formerly the director of musical studies for the Young American Artist Program at Glimmerglass Opera, as well as the director of artistic administration for Florida Grand Opera, Mr. Hansen's former students and young artists can now be seen in all of the major operatic houses of the world, including The Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Seattle Opera, Canadian Opera Company, L'Opéra de Montreal, Covent Garden, and La Scala. Mr. Hansen has also been the music director for numerous musicals and has been on the music staffs of The Juilliard Opera Center, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Pittsburgh Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Tulsa Opera, Nashville Opera, and Opera Memphis.

Playwright Dr. Keir Cutler on The Shakespeare Authorship Question: Why am I a "Crackpot"

Tuesday, October 16th at 7:30pm

The controversy surrounding the question as to who really wrote Shakespeare's works has been raging for more than 400 years. No one has ever succeeded in establishing the authenticity of William Shakespeare as the author; nor has it ever been proven that someone other than the bard was responsible.

Many names have been suggested as possibilities: Francis Bacon, Christopher Marlowe, the 17th Earl of Oxford (Edward de Vere) and Amelia Bassano Lanier to name a few. Mr. Cutler will offer "proof" that it was almost impossible for the man from Stratford Upon-Avon to be the author.
One of the oldest learned societies in North America, the St. James sessions provide a forum for the free exchange of ideas... for the social and the cerebral.
