November News: Top Girls shines & Alvin Segal honoured

Montreal's vibrant theatre community came together on October 20th for the second annual MONTREAL ENGLISH THEATRE AWARDS, where the Segal was recognized with eight awards for the 2013-2014 Season. Our production of Caryl Churchill's Top Girls took home five awards, including Best Actress (Leni Parker) & Best Director (Micheline Chevrier) and Best Design nods for designers Max-otto Fauteux, Mylène Chabrol and Martin Sirois. The Best Supporting Actor awards went to Othello's Julie Tamiko Manning and Danny Brochu while Aiza Ntibarikure was presented with the Best Emerging Artist Award for her acclaimed performance in Ain't Misbehavin'. Congratulations to all nominees and winners!

On November 20th, Mayor Denis Coderre will present ALVIN SEGAL, OC, OQ, President and Chairman of the Segal Centre Board of Directors, with a Great Montrealers Award for his outstanding contribution to Montreal's economic sector. Offered by the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, this award pays tribute to remarkable individuals who, through their achievements, have inspired and left their mark on generations of Montrealers. And guess who will be recognized from the cultural sector? Our friend, Oliver Jones! Join us in congratulating these two dedicated ambassadors on this prestigious honour.

BACKSTAGE PASS: ARTISTS HELPING ARTISTS

"Artists Helping Artists The Actors' Fund of Canada provides emergency financial aid to assist artists going through troubling times. Over 10,000 professionals from all over Canada and in the fields of film & TV, theatre, music and dance have been helped by the Fund, including performers, creators, technical staff and production team members. For most, working in the entertainment industry is a passion and calling that often comes with tremendous reward; for many it can result in a life of uncertainty. It is common when working in the theatre to consider your fellow cast members and crew as a second family. When in need, your family steps up to help you, whether through groceries, rent, or aid with immediate needs. This is the raison d'être of this vital charity organization.

The Actors' Fund is wholly sustained through support of individuals, often fellow artists, and entertainment organizations. In my time spent as an actor at the Charlottetown Festival, the company raised close to $1000 through a backstage bake sale hosted after every matinee performance. We knew the funds raised would go towards taking care of our own.

On Thursday, November 13th following their performance, the cast of Belles Soeurs: The Musical will be throwing a Company Cabaret in support of the Actors' Fund. You are invited to hear them sing their favourite songs for a suggested donation of $10. By the same token, each participant is paying to perform.

Please consider joining us to experience firsthand the joy of off-stage camaraderie, the incredible talents of this phenomenal cast and an added celebration of this historical production.
