It’s 1917, the height of the Great War. In Zurich, Switzerland, famous writer James Joyce is writing his ground-breaking novel Ulysses; poet Tristan Tzara is forming the anti-art movement known as Dadaism; and revolutionary Vladimir Lenin is restlessly plotting his return to Russia. And Henry Carr, of the British Consular Service, knew them all! Or so he seems to recall...

Andre Furlani is a professor of English at Concordia University in Montréal, currently working on Samuel Beckett in the context of German literature and philosophy. His work focuses on modernism and postmodernism, including Ezra Pound, Milton, Brecht, and contemporary Canadian poetry. He lectures regularly on Joyce’s “Ulysses”, and on Tom Stoppard’s work.
